Aims & Targets

MEASURED’s main objective is to provide a quantum leap in the development of membrane technologies for pervaporation, gas separation and membrane distillation, setting the basis for future commercialization of greener technological pathways all along the value chain. This goal will be reached by:

  • Designing and setting up a broad and complete network of value chains with world-class industrial partners, universities, research centres to develop the key building blocks for membrane applications (Figure 1). MEASURED will connect material developers with key players in the chemical industry, thereby matching existing needs and new products with the essential link provided by innovative organisations that are capable of developing advanced membrane technologies that will meet the challenges of the coming years.
  • Developing a set of flexible cost-effective and environmentally friendly membranes that can be easily tailored for different applications (cross-fertilization).
  • Laying the foundations for new business opportunities, including:
    • The development of novel ceramic, carbon molecular sieve (CMSM) and polymeric membranes for their integration in newly designed membrane modules for three applications.
    • The development of 3 new prototypes for the testing of the membranes in different applications at TRL7.
    • The creation of a spinoff company for the commercialization of CMSM for different applications.

To achieve the overall objective, MEASURED is divided in the following specific targets:

  • To develop at TRL7 three new generation membrane materials for three different applications.
  • To scale-up the synthesis process for the manufacture of CMSM for gas separation. Study the modification of the synthesis for the other applications.
  • To scale-up the synthesis process for the manufacture of ceramic membranes for pervaporation. Study the modification of the synthesis for the other applications.
  • To scale-up the synthesis process for the manufacture of polymeric membranes for membrane distillation. Study the modification of the synthesis for the other applications.
  • To model at multiscale level the different membranes to guide the development activities and identify a TRL9 roadmap.

  • To develop a full LCA, LCC and Health and Safety Analysis (HSE) of MEASURED.
  • To pave the way for future exploitation of MEASURED Key Exploitable Results (KER).
  • To elaborate the business case (BC) of KER1. Pervaporation: Novel ceramic membranes and their use in membrane separation.
  • To elaborate the business case of KER2. Membrane distillation: Novel polymeric membranes and their use in membrane distillation (MD).
  • To elaborate the business case of KER3. Gas separation: Novel carbon molecular sieve membranes and their use in membrane separation.
  • To promote the dissemination and communication of MEASURED’s results and expand its impact.
